A summary about the
youth summer activities run by
the Arab Community Center during the summer of 2009
Arab Community
Centresummer program is for youth
between the ages of 12 and 19, which aims to build a bond between Canadian born
youth and newcomer youth to Canada in order to build friendships and make the
newcomer youth transition easier from one hand and make the Canadian youth
understand their duty, as young, in their society. The activities covered
Entertainment, and social areas.
After long time of planning and preparation, the Acct youth summer program was
successfully able to occupy 60 young male and female youth. These 60 youth
participated in planning, management, designing, documenting the summer
programs.
It is our pleasure now to
show you a brief report about all activities that were held in summer 2009.
1.Sports Day
Arab Community Centre of
Toronto has taken on Thursdays of each week a Sports day in partnership with
Toronto District School Board, which included lessons in Taekwondo and yoga in
addition to basket ball and soccer with lunch.
2.Dardachat
On Tuesdays of each week
a program called “Dardachat” was held which includes talking about issues of interest
to the youth from greater Toronto Area, and in some cases adults were invited
and decision makers.
3.Sport-in-a-Box
In partnership with
UNA-Canada, a Sports- in-A –Box Activities were held at ACCT Premises run by
ACCT youth for children between the ages of 9 and 12 which included lunch and
distributing gifts. Sports-in-a-Box an innovative project developed by
UNA-Canada to encourage active, healthy living for life while bringing
awareness of global issues that affect us all to youth and their communities
through sport.
4.TROOP Camp
In Collaboration of
Toronto Police, 25 Acct Youth participated ina camping trip for one week free
of charge. Each Session consists of two days of training and familiarization
activities on the Toronto waterfront at Sunnyside Beach using the traditional
canoes of the Canadian Voyageurs. Participants will than spend three days
travelling together in the wilderness of Ontario in the style of these early
explorers.
In addition to what was
mentioned Youth represented the ACCT at different Conferences and in some cases
they even presented at the conference.
The young people, especially
newcomers to Canada,were happy with the
outcomes of the program as it was expressed by one of theparticipants who said "the program
allowed me to meet friends in Canada, especially that a new school year is
starting soon”.
